Rogue / Redwoods

We toured the Union Creek area on foot in the morning and visited a few sites along the rogue river that exhibited it’s power. We left mid-morning destined for Redwoods National Park. The highway we were on continued to follow the Rogue River down towards the coast. After watching it wind back and forth and seeing signs for rafting we stopped at a spot to see what the details were. The guy said all we needed was $40 and a signature on a release form to ride the river for 10 miles. He put the three of us on an inflatable kayak in the river then picked us up a couple hours later. The water was cold and the current strong.

This pleasant detour kept us from getting to Redwood country until late in the evening. We found a campsite at Del Norte State Park in California and walked through groves of redwoods. The campsite and park were dreadful and crowded. And the place was infested with banana slugs. Massive live balls of yellow-green snot that appear everywhere, albeit slowly. We couldn’t wait to get out of California back into Oregon. Christine has moved it to #49 in her top state list right in front of Louisianna.

my memory of the redwoods is very positive. but, remember running with dad chasing me and falling on the roots, flying face first. but, the size of the trees are beyond belief!
